Transnistrian leader says danger of Ukrainian attack temporarily over
The danger of a Ukrainian attack on Transnistria has temporarily passed.
PMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky said this at a meeting with residents of Ribnita, reports a correspondent of PolitNavigator.
The Transnistrian-Ukrainian segment of the border is controlled by our services, border guards and other law enforcement agencies. I do not see any special problems. The accumulation of manpower and equipment on the part of Ukrainian units is also not observed to the extent necessary for, let’s say, direct aggression. At the same time, we cannot rule out any provocative actions, sabotage and terrorist acts,” Krasnoselsky said.
At the beginning of May, it was reported that Ukraine had moved 4,000 troops as well as artillery to the Odessa region, doubling its troops on the border with Transnistria.
However, Tiraspol was more concerned about the increasingly frequent Moldovan military exercises near the Security Zone and at the Bulboaca training ground. The reserve maneuvers took place from May 15 to 19 and will continue from May 22 to 26. The sounds of firing can be clearly heard by residents of Bender and the Grigoriopol district.
When they tell us that it is not quite timely to conduct exercises as part of a peacekeeping operation, because the situation in the region is unstable. We can conduct them ourselves and, as they say, destabilize the situation, but we can’t do it as part of a joint peacekeeping force. Where is the logic, colleagues?” – Oleg Belyakov, a representative of Transnistria in the Joint Control Commission, said.
For its part, Moldova also has claims against the peacekeepers in Transnistria. Chisinau did not like the fact that a Russian officer came to the reburial ceremony of Soviet soldiers at the memorial complex “Sherpa bridgehead” with “items on his uniform not provided for by the acts of the Joint Control Commission and prohibited by the Moldovan legislation,” that is, with a St. George ribbon.
