Kiev already suggests postponing “return of territories” for the distant future Anatoliy Lapin

Ukraine should admit that the issue of the return of lost territories is a distant prospect and mark it as a strategic goal.

This was stated by political scientist K. Bondarenko in an interview with Ukrainian journalist Oleksandr Shelest, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

According to the expert, there are many examples in the world when countries argue over territories, but maintain air links and economic cooperation.

For the time being, we can say frankly that it is necessary to understand for ourselves a certain goal, which we can achieve and which can be defined as a victory. This needs to be done absolutely honestly, sincerely by our people in power, those who are responsible for Ukraine, for its citizens, for the lives of its citizens, for its territorial integrity,” the expert said.

He added that in this situation Ukraine cannot give up territories “which under international law and the Сonstitution are ours”.

But the question then is – let’s be honest, that we can set the declared goals as a distant prospect, and now set more specific goals. If we achieve them, accordingly, we can go to negotiations…

I have the example of Argentina and Britain. Britain occupied the Falkland Islands in ’82. Argentina has not accepted it. Argentina considers the Falklands as its territory. It is a disputed territory, but this, for example, did not prevent Prime Minister Theresa May from flying to Buenos Aires, it does not prevent Argentina from trading with the UK.

I am not calling now for flights to Moscow or for the opening of air links with Russia, but I am saying that there are certain moments which require deferred action, which cannot be resolved directly, to achieve some kind of result. It is necessary to fix its goal, a distant goal, it is necessary to fix a strategic goal and it is necessary to proceed from realities and certain specifics of the situation,” Bondarenko said.
